    Let's talk about electric forklifts. As CEO of IVITAL Forklift, my team and I have been through countless discussions about whether electric forklifts are an efficiency improvement or an expensive trend.

    Electric forklifts, while innovative and environmentally friendly on paper, come with their own set of challenges that might make you think twice. They're not just a simple plug-and-play alternative to your traditional diesel-powered lift.

    After all, who isn’t tempted by the promise of a quieter, cleaner machine? They say change is as good as a rest, but when it comes to the nitty-gritty of operational costs, things get a bit more complicated.

    What About the Upfront Costs?

    Feedback from our customers suggests that an electric forklift's upfront cost is typically higher than an internal combustion engine (ICE) forklift, mainly due to the cost of batteries and chargers. Below are some highlights of the upfront costs of electric forklift trucks:
    • A new electric forklift with a capacity of 5,000 lbs typically costs between $25,000 and $37,000, including the battery and charger. A similar ICE forklift can cost between $22,000 and $30,000.
    • Batteries and chargers alone can add $2,500 - $5,000 to the purchase price of an electric forklift.
    • For higher capacities, such as 10,000 lbs, the price range for an electric forklift is $37,000 to $80,000, while an ICE forklift costs $30,000 to $45,000.
    • Of course, lithium-ion batteries are more expensive up front than lead-acid batteries for electric forklifts, but they offer longer life and faster charging.

    The difference between lead-acid and lithium batteries for electric forklifts.

    Lead-Acid Batteries

    • Lower upfront cost but higher long-term operating costs
    • Require regular maintenance like watering, equalizing charge, cleaning
    • Shorter lifespan of around 1,000-1,500 charge cycles or 4-5 years
    • Longer charging times of 8-12 hours, plus cooling down period

    Lithium-Ion Batteries

    • Longer lifespan of 2,000-3,000 charge cycles or 5-10 years
    • Faster charging times as low as 1-2 hours with opportunity charging
    • Higher energy efficiency and lower emissions

    Are there hidden expenses in forklift battery maintenance?

    A new electric forklift will not have any problems, but it does not exclude the use of abnormal operations. The following are some of the issues I listed for you.
    1.The forklift is out of power because of low efficiency and work delay. This situation of the need to charge in time when not in use can be solved, or a removable battery forklift can be an excellent solution to this problem.
    2.For lead-acid batteries, it is also necessary to use electrolytes and refill them promptly.
    3.For enterprises with high work intensity, the cost of batteries may also need to be increased. This will ensure that the work stops without power while using the forklift.

    Are electric forklifts really greener?

    Electric forklifts are often considered greener than their diesel or gas-powered counterparts due to their low emissions and lower energy consumption. However, the environmental impact of electric forklifts depends on several factors, including the energy source used to charge the batteries and the manufacturing process of the batteries themselves.
    Electric forklifts are an eco-friendly alternative to internal combustion (IC) engine-powered forklifts. During operation, electric forklifts do not produce any harmful emissions, which can effectively reduce a facility's carbon footprint. According to a study conducted by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), IC engine-powered forklifts emit 120,000 more pounds of carbon emissions than electric-powered forklifts for every 10,000 hours of use.
    In addition to reducing emissions, electric forklifts can help companies save on energy costs. Electric forklifts generate very little heat, reducing the strain on warehouse temperature-control units and cooling and air conditioning prices. They also require less maintenance than IC engine-powered forklifts, as they have fewer moving parts and do not require engine, transmission, or coolant fluid changes.
    However, the environmental impact of electric forklifts has its drawbacks. The production of batteries for electric forklifts can contribute to CO2 emissions, and the mining of materials for batteries can lead to localized pollution, contamination, and destruction of the environment. Additionally, the emissions caused by charging electric forklifts can vary depending on the source of electricity used to charge the batteries.
    Overall, while electric forklifts offer significant environmental benefits, it is essential to consider the entire lifecycle of the forklift, including the manufacturing process and the source of electricity used to charge the batteries. Companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and improve their sustainability should consider the environmental impact of electric forklifts in the context of their overall sustainability goals and strategies.

    What new risks do electric forklift trucks pose?

    While there are obvious concerns about environmental pollution and noise, there are also some hidden dangers to be concerned about with electric forklifts.
    1.Reduced noise levels lead to blind spot accidents, and electric forklifts operate at lower noise levels (around 60 dB) than petrol/diesel forklifts (around 85 dB). This makes them harder to hear in noisy warehouse environments, increasing the risk of blind spot accidents due to pedestrians or other forklifts not noticing their presence.
    2.Battery Charging/Maintenance Hazards
    • Explosive hydrogen gas can be generated during battery charging.
    • Risk of electric shock, burns, or short circuits if batteries are not handled properly
    • Risk of exposure to acids/chemicals in lead-acid batteries if not maintaine
    3.Batteries are heavy; electric forklift batteries can weigh hundreds of pounds, increasing the risk of injury if proper lifting equipment and procedures are not used when changing batteries.
    4.Warehouse environments require improved ventilation, designated charging areas, and layout changes to safely accommodate electric forklift trucks and their battery charging/replacement requirements.
